Change of Character (CHoCH)

Filter in the app: CHoCH

A change of character, shortened to CHoCH, is a break against the swing that was in force. Price takes out a prior lower high during a decline, or a prior higher low during a rise. People search for a change of character when they want a name for that first shift. CHoCH does not mean the larger trend has ended, and it does not mean price will go up. In PatternLabs the filter is called CHoCH. This page explains the change of character and how a scan uses CHoCH. It is not financial advice and not a signal.

What a change of character shows

While a decline is printing lower highs, the first time price breaks above one of those lower highs is read as a change of character. While a rise is printing higher lows, the first time price breaks below one of those higher lows is also a change of character. The CHoCH label marks that the short sequence of swings has been interrupted. It is often discussed next to a break of structure, because a BOS extends the existing sequence and a CHoCH steps against it. Neither label tells you the size of the next move.

What CHoCH does not say

A change of character is not proof of a reversal and not a promise of profit. Price can break one swing and then fall straight back into the old direction. One CHoCH on a low timeframe can be noise inside a larger swing. PatternLabs does not convert a CHoCH match into an order. The filter finds pairs where a change of character is present on the timeframe you chose. Seeing CHoCH in the list means the condition matched. It does not mean you should buy or sell.

How to look for CHoCH in PatternLabs

Open PatternLabs, pick a market among the crypto spot pairs and forex the app covers, and add CHoCH to the filter chain. Choose the timeframe you actually want to read. The scan returns pairs where that CHoCH condition matches. Open a match to inspect the chart. If you want fewer rows, combine CHoCH with filters already in the app, such as BOS, FVG, or Volume. Do not look for a new button. The name in the chain is CHoCH. A change of character on a small timeframe is easier to misread, so the higher timeframe still matters.

How to read a match

Look at which swing the change of character actually broke. A CHoCH above a minor high inside a larger decline is not the same picture as a CHoCH that breaks the swing everyone has been watching. PatternLabs can show the match across the chain you built. You still have to compare timeframes yourself. This explanation of a change of character does not tell you the next direction, and it does not promise a result.
